5 Simple Tips for Good Oral Health

They say a smile is the best accessory you can wear, and we have to agree!

Taking good care of your teeth and gums not only helps keep your pearly whites bright, but is also integral to the prevention of tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath.

Good oral hygiene doesn’t have to take long and by making it part of your daily routine you can ensure a long lasting and healthy smile.

Let’s keep it simple. Here are 5 tips to help maintain great oral health.

1. It seems so obvious - Brush and floss!

It’s so important to brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day (especially before bed). A soft-bristled toothbrush that fits your mouth comfortably is best.

An electric or battery-operated toothbrush is a great option to try out. The smaller brush head combined with good brushing technique, can help reduce plaque and gingivitis more than manual brushing does. Some models come with a pressure sensor to help maintain a steady and soft pressure to avoid gum aggravation. Hard brushing can lead to tooth brush abrasion on tooth enamel, which can lead to sensitive teeth.

Interdental brushes are another good alternative to dental floss. Research has shown that the use of interdental brushes to be more effective at cleaning those hard to reach areas in between your teeth that your tooth brush can't get to.

2. Eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks between meals

The minerals and vitamins found in a lot of natural foods are essential to help build and maintain strong bones, and fight disease. Calcium, Vitamin A, C, D, K, Phosphorus and Potassium can be found in an array of fruits and veggies and are perfect for strengthening and protecting teeth and gums.

*Extra tip: Try limiting snacking outside of main meal times and drink plenty of water. Fibrous, water rich foods such as apples and celery are a great choice if you do feel the need to snack. Not only are they healthy, their texture can help remove food and plaque.

3. If you smoke, quit! Limit Sodas, Coffee and Alcohol

We don’t need to go into the general benefits of quitting smoking and limiting the consumption of sugary foods and drinks for your health, but we will say consuming cigarettes, sodas, coffee and alcohol wreaks havoc on your teeth. The harmful acidity found in these substances attacks your protective enamel, which can lead to erosion. When it comes to sodas, coffee and alcohol, moderation is key and remember to rinse your mouth with water after.

4. Using dental products that contain fluoride, including toothpaste

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It also reverses early decay.

* Extra tip: Here in Australia we are lucky that the tap water in most parts has fluoride added - just another benefit of drinking un-bottled environmentally friendly water.

5. Visit Your Dentist regularly

It’s important to have regular oral health checkups as your dentist will be able to help you prevent tooth and gum issues and not just deal with problems as they arise.

We hope these tips help and make sure you look after that smile.
