A lost tooth can make you feel self-conscious about your appearance and fear the thought of showing your smile. Even worse, a missing tooth can make it difficult to eat the foods we need and lead towards secondary health problems such as malnutrition.
Dental implants are a great way to return your smile to completion and give your jaw the strength and stability it needs prevent bone loss and support your facial features.
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots used to support the restoration of a missing tooth or teeth which may have been lost due to disease or trauma (such as a bad tackle on the footy field). Implants are designed to mimic real teeth and exist in many forms. The term dental implants covers both replacing teeth with a fixed bridge to creating a removable set of dentures.
So, if I need a dental implant, what does the procedure involve?
Step 1:
During the first stage an implant post is placed in the jawbone (don’t worry, you’ll typically be sedated). An incision is then made in the gum line and a pilot hole is created for insertion of the implant.
Following this we need to give your mouth some time to heal. The gum tissue is secured over the implant and is left to heal for about 3 months so that the bone has time to fuse to the implant. This process is known as osseointegration.
Step 2:
Once the implant is fused, another incision is then made and a healing cap is placed to shape the gum tissue to support the crown or bridge.
Step 3:
The final stage is to thread an abutment into the implant. Once this has healed the crown, bridge or dentures can be attached at a later date.
